Cat® Skid Steer Sizes

Caterpillar manufactures several skid steer models in small, medium and large sizes. Each size category — and model within the category — has different specifications. These specs matter when deciding which skid steer to purchase. Buying a skid steer that aligns with your applications means you can get the job done efficiently while staying within budget.

Louisiana Cat has Cat® skid steers for sale in several sizes. Review our skid steer size chart and assess your job requirements to determine which model is right for you.

SKID STEER SPECIFICATIONS TO CONSIDER

Cat skid steers have several specifications that vary slightly by model. The most important skid steer specs to consider when browsing the models are:

  • Engine power: Engine power is the amount of power the engine produces, typically expressed in horsepower. This spec matters because it determines the tasks the skid steer can handle, including multitasking.
  • Operating capacity: The rated operating capacity (ROC) is the load capacity that the model can carry safely. You can expect a skid steer to carry loads up to its ROC without tipping.
  • Operating weight: The operating weight is the weight of the machine itself. This spec factors in the operator’s weight and fuel, as they are required to use the equipment.
  • Wheelbase: The wheelbase spec is the distance between the front and rear axles. A higher wheelbase gives the skid steer more stability to support higher ROCs and tipping loads. This spec varies by frame size. The wheelbase is 36 inches for small-frame skid steers, 40 inches for medium-frame models and 48 inches for large-frame skid steers.
  • Width: The width spec is how wide the skid steer is over the tires. This spec matters because it determines if the skid steer will have room to maneuver around the job site.

SKID STEER SIZES CATERPILLAR OFFERS

These specifications determine what size category the skid steer is. For instance, here is the Cat skid steer size chart by ROC and engine power:

  • Small-frame: ROC of less than 1,750 pounds and engine with less than 50 horsepower
  • Medium-frame: ROC between 1,750 and 2,200 pounds and engine with 50 to 70 horsepower
  • Large-frame: ROC of over 2,200 pounds and engine with more than 70 horsepower

Skid steer loaders by Caterpillar have a wide selection of options within these five specifications. Across all size categories, Cat skid steers have a reputation for reliability, durability, versatility, efficiency and power.

The small-frame skid steers include:

  • 226D3: This model has 67.1 horsepower for lighter material handling tasks up to 1,550 pounds.

Our medium-frame skid steers are:

  • 232D3: The 232D3 skid steer has an operating weight of 6,514 pounds for mid-range tasks.
  • 236D3: This model has slightly higher capabilities than the 232D3 at 1,800 pounds ROC and 74.3 horsepower.

Cat large-frame skid steers include:

  • 242D3: This model is the smallest in the large-frame category at 2,200 pounds ROC.
  • 246D3: The 246D3 boasts 7,478 pounds of operating weight.
  • 262D3: As the mid-range option in the large frame category, the 262D3 offers 2,700 pounds ROC and a 49.2-inch wheelbase.
  • 272D3: The 272D3 model has a horsepower of 98 and a ROC of 3,450 pounds.
  • 272D3 XE: This skid steer model can support heavy-duty tasks with 110 horsepower and a wheelbase of 54.6 inches.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SKID STEER SIZE

Since each skid steer model is unique, compare each model’s specs to your application to decide which Cat skid steer meets your needs. Follow these tips to choose the correct skid steer size:

1. IDENTIFY YOUR BUDGET

Skid steer size correlates with price, so large skid steers cost more than small skid steers. Choosing the smallest size for your applications ensures you can get the job done without going over budget.

2. EXAMINE THE JOB SITE

Certain terrains require a specific skid steer size for efficient operation. For example, small skid steers work best on hard, flat ground, such as concrete and asphalt. Large skid steers can better handle challenging surfaces with rocks and mud.

3. DETERMINE YOUR SITE LAYOUT AND DIMENSIONS

The dimensions and layout of the work area affect which skid steer model is most useful. For instance, job sites with tight spaces, several obstacles and limited storage space would benefit from a small skid steer that’s easy to maneuver and transport. Spacious job sites with heavy-duty tasks need a large skid steer to complete the job efficiently.

4. DECIDE THE TASKS THE SKID STEER WILL DO

Every skid steer size has a power capacity. Intensive tasks are best suited for a large model that can handle the loads. Lightweight loads may only need a small skid steer to get the job done. Read our skid steer size chart to see which jobs each skid steer size can handle:

  • Small-frame: Light landscaping, residential job sites and interior demolition work
  • Medium-frame: Mid-sized earthmoving and construction jobs
  • Large-frame: Commercial-scale excavation, demolition and road construction

5. ASSESS THE LIFT

Skid steers have one of two lift mechanisms — vertical or radial. Vertical lifts are best suited for high, out-of-reach places, such as unloading pallets off a truck. Radial lifts are ideal for digging and moving close to the ground, like excavating for a foundation.

6. CONSIDER THE ATTACHMENTS NEEDED

You can use several attachments with a skid steer loader, such as a snow blower, pallet fork or auger. Using attachments adds extra weight, so consider a larger skid steer for maximum functionality.
